Coke Is Mine

“Coke it’s Mine”

CREDITS

Agency—Wieden & Kennedy

Director—Nicalai Fuglsig

Production—MJZ

VFX—The Mill NY www.the-mill.com

What Happens

During a Macy’s Day Parade the Stui float and the Under Dog float got loose and started chasing the loose Coke bottle float. The battle gets heated while flying through the New York skylight, and when the Coke bottle finally gets away from them over Central Park, the good old Charlie Brown float catches the Coke float with a big smile.

Additional Background

Weiden & Kennedy an Ad Agency with an office in Portland Oregon, as well as six other cities around the world like Amsterdam, Shanghai, and Tokyo. With each office handling big name clients like Coke, Dodge, Jeep, Procter &Gamble, and Delta.

Nicalai Fuglsig at age 16 started out with a digital video camera during the Kosovo War. His film titled “Return of the Exiled” was aired by both Danish National Television and the Danish Cinema. Soon after, he was on the short list of directors doing Levi’s short film.

The Mill NY based in London England, created several of the commercials that aired during the last Super Bowl: from the high speed beetle, the old west Budweiser with the Clydesdales, to the new Old Spice commercials.

A key Question

He was having fun with the Macy’s day floats, showing that anyone will go to great lengths to get a Coke. And with the use of the floats (digitally created of course), he just made that need for a Coke that much greater.

Your Impressions

I wasn’t trying to pick two Coke ads but this one stood out to me. Using two iconic images like Under Dog and Stui from the show Family Guy, trying to cut each other off in hopes of catching the Coke bottle from flying away. As they drift higher in the New York skyline bouncing off each other and the buildings, the bottle gets away over Central Park and low and behold Good old Charlie Brown drifts up in the end to save the Coke bottle from drifting forever.

What happens

A rat sews up an eggplant costume to sneak into the refrigerator while a human has the door open. Once the rat gets inside, starts looking for the Coke can. But two other rats have the same idea, climb out of their costumes and prepare to fight for the last can of Coke. The eggplant rat breaks his light in two and adds a length of chain and makes a nunchuck, and fights off the other two rats and gets the Coke.

Akama studio/ www.akamastudio.com A post production company who’s expertise from 3D, Special Effects, and Digital animation. Has netted them jobs with Bosch Fridge, Champion Perfume, Closer Magazine, Kellogg’s, and Mercedes Benz to name a few.

A key Question

I think that the filmmaker is trying to say that one will go to great lengths to get a coke. From making a costume to help break in, to defeating others with the same end goals to get what you want. That a Coke is a very refreshing drink and no task is to small to obtain one.

Your impressions

I’ve always had a thing for rats, their good pets when they have a big enough cage. And they like being held, and will cuddle if you let them crawl under your shirt. But they have also made good characters in commercials and movies over the years, from Walt Disney to Coke. This rat was a thinking rat from the start. He made a costume that resembled an eggplant, and while wearing it ran wobbled through the kitchen to get behind the human that was looking in the fridge. He was able to jump in and conceal himself with the other produce on the shelf. After finding the last Coke in the fridge, come face to face with two other rats with the same goal in mind.

Ford: True Beauty

I watched the 2006 short film "Ford 'True Beauty'". It was directed by Carl Rinsch and animated by the company Digital Domain in the UK. The film is a combination of live-action vehicle footage with 3D X-ray imagery.

The basic synopsis of the film is that it cuts between scenes of an actual Ford car and X-ray imagery of various animals. The entire film is set to a beautiful piano score, which adds to the beauty of the film, as stated in the title.

If you would like to read an article about more of Ford's advertising tactics, this is a great one. From this article I learned that Ford actually spend vastly fewer dollars advertising the Mondeo than they have on other models. This is interesting because I am much more intrigued by the Mondeo commercials than others I have seen.

From this link, I learned that the director, Carl Rinsch, works primarily in car commercial advertisement. I watched a few of his other commercials here, and he definitely has his own style, and out of the box concepts, which is refreshing for the advertisement industry.

This film is meant to be an advertisement for the Ford Mondeo ECOnetic car. Unlike many other car ads, this film focuses on beauty in order to try to convey that the true beauty of the Ford ECOnetic is more than skin deep. The skin deep metaphor is established by X-ray imagery that is initially of humans and animals, but then transitions to X-ray imagery of the car's engine and parts. In order to drive the idea of beauty home even more, the film is set to a beautiful and dramatic piano score and the vocals are much softer and more elegant than your typical car advertisement voices.

The reason that I was drawn to this film was for the piano, as I am a lover of music. I was very intrigued to see a car commercial that did not involve annoying talking and footage of a car zipping through the mountains. I think this is one of the most effective things about this film - it is extremely unique for a car advertisement. Sometimes something that is so vastly different from all others in the same category ends up being less effective, but I don't think this is the case for this film. It is a fantastic combination of metaphor and calm. The downside for this film for me is that while the beauty is conveyed very well, I am not sure if I am tempted to actually go learn more about the car. For me, I find myself so wrapped up in the metaphor and beauty of the film, that it somewhat detracts from the purpose of the film - to get people to buy the car.

What Happens:
This video takes you on a journey to the city most of us wished we lived in. It takes you through an amazing city... a city were anything is possible, where it’s fun to take the train to work, race through the mall, and take skateboarding to new heights (literally).
They used:
*Autodesk 3ds Max provides powerful, integrated 3D modeling, animation, rendering, and compositing that enable artists and designers to more quickly ramp up for production.
*SynthEyes offers complete control over the tracking process for challenging shots, combined automated/supervised tracking, offset tracking, incremental solving, a hard and soft path locking system, distance constraints for low-perspective shots, and cross-camera constraints for stereo.
*Adobe After Effects enables you to create motion graphics and visual effects.
*NUKE a powerful compositing product, creating high-quality digital images integrated 3D compositing environment.
*Premiere, Adobe Craft video productions, motion graphics, visual effects.
*Photoshop Adobe is the ultimate solution for advanced digital imaging.

Question:
I believe the film makers are trying to get us to see is that anything is possible... we just have to “think” and to keep thinking; with new ideas and new thinking can we change anything.
Impressions:
This film stood out to me because it made me be inspired to think... to think about the world I want to live in; and how I can help create that world with my ideas. I have always loved the idea of a “perfect” world, a world where everything was “seamless” and “peaceful”, a place where everyone had a smile on their face just because they were just happy to be there. I’ve always looked at that “world” as one that could never be, that it was all in my head, and in videos with special FXs. But lately I’ve been thinking that world isn’t as far away as I think it is, and I have to help bring it about... I have to be willing to get up, and bring my dream to life.

*Stop motion (also known as stop action) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Motion animation using clay is called clay animation or clay-mation.
*Adobe After Effects enables you to create motion graphics and visual effects.
*Photoshop Adobe is the ultimate solution for advanced digital imaging.
*Dragon Stop Motion creates stop-motion animated films, motion graphics and visual effects. It is used widely for feature film, commercial, broadcast television and independent film.

*Autodesk Maya software offers tools for 3D animation, modeling, simulation, visual effects, rendering, match moving, and compositing. A revitalized user interface, enhanced viewport interaction, 3D editorial capabilities, integrated color management, and character animation.

* Chaos Group V-Ray is a rendering engine that is used as an extension of certain 3D computer graphics software.
*Cinema 4D is a modeling, animation and rendering package.
Question:
The film makers are trying to get us to use Google eBooks, by showing us how “easy” it is to use.

Impressions:
I liked this video, because I love to read. And having books online where I can get to them at any point in time, is a really nice thought. Like I said, I love reading, and I love books, but having to pick which one I might want to read later in the day is challenging... and having to actually carry the book is difficult because it’s big, and bulky, and I usually have five million other things I’m carrying... and in most cases I usually end up not reading it when I have it with me. It’s usually the times I forgot my book at home that I want to read it.

HONDA CROSSRUNNER
Viral/corporate video :60
Agency: WIEDEN+KENNEDY
Director: CHRIS SAYER
Production: WYLD STALLYONS
Animation/VFX: WYLD STALLYONS
wyldstallyons.com

What Happens:
In this short film a motorcycle rider parks his bike and walks away accidentally knocking over a bucket of paint. The bucket of paint sees the motorcycle and get excited and paints the alleyway where the bike is parked like a race track and pretends the motorcycle is racing down the alley way. The street looked very similar to a video game when the paint was pretending to ride the bike.

What they tried to do:
I think what the makers were trying to do was create a simple yet fun commercial for the new Honda Crossrunner. In this commercial I think they were trying to portray an excitement about ridding the motorcycle by implying that even paint wishes it was able to ride it. The film also had a video game feel to it which I would say was aimed at the video game generation. I am sure that they were trying to reach the gaming demographic.

My impressions:
This was a very fun little commercial. It used imagination and creativity to invoke the feeling that their product would be fun to ride and gave the idea of excitement everywhere you go. I think it spoke to me because it was so similar to a video game and it brings back memories of the fun I had playing them growing up. I am sure that was their intention. Beyond that there wasn’t any wasted moments, the film was short and held my attention the whole time. It was simple and to the point. There was no wondering what it was about.

What Happens:
In this short film called Shapeshifter There is a car that does just that. It starts out with a car going down a wet road at night. The passes through a dimensional portal and explodes into thousands of pieces. On the other side of the portal the car reassembles into many different animals such as a panther, a fish, and a bird. Each shift is like a portion of the cars spirit being let loose in a beautiful dream world.

What they tried to do:
This looked like a car commercial but I think it ended up much bigger. They created a beautiful world with a very complex set of 3d graphics. The pieces exploding and then reassembling were very awe inspiring. I think the makers were mainly trying to test themselves, to expand the limits of their own abilities.

My impressions:
The reason I was drawn to this film is the idea that things can be shattered and become something new. The idea of reinventing yourself is a very interesting concept to me. I enjoyed how seamlessly the pieces came together and the endless possibilities for what was coming next.

SUBARU - "The Carparts"

Title – SUBARU “The Carparts”

Director: Timo Schaedel

Agency: Dentsu Creative X Inc.

Creative Director: Jun Katogi

Year of production: 2010 released in January 2011

Production: Marketfilm Infected

Animation/post production: Infected/Lafourmi

Producer: Alexander Steinhoff

Editor: Philipp Dreyer, Hans Hartmann

Music: Michael Fakesch

What Happens: The journey of a Subaru car through a magical unrealistic landscape made of car parts. At the beginning you see it from the car point of view and towards the end you finally get to see the car itself. The best part is the way this “car parts” world was created: trees, animals, waterfalls, all nature is made of different car parts, and so are man-made constructions like skyscrapers, buildings and roads. Everything moves very smoothly and realistically.

Tools and production techniques: There was an extensive use of special effects and photo-realism techniques to be able to create this unrealistic “car parts” world. They probably used many 3D techniques, illustrations, photo montages and rendering techniques. Lighting and shading are also a big part of this video, without them it probably wouldn’t look as realistic and “lively”.

A Key Question: This was a commercial created for Subaru. The inspiration was the new Subaru tagline “confidence in motion” and the goal of the video was to create emotional landscapes and scenarios from otherwise pretty technical and cold components. At the end, the message is for the viewer to Explore a world greater than the sum of its parts”.

My Impressions: I believe the intentions of the makers of the video were very successful. This video is very emotional, thanks to the flowing movements and flowing music that go so well together, and it was able to create a magical world made of metallic parts that look full of life. It’s the first time I see a car commercial trying to convey these kind of emotions and being so successful in doing so. It definitely shows that there’s a completely different culture behind this message, more spiritual and with different values (Japan).
